The Naturescaper's Library

Author's Faves--great reading for any naturescaper wanting to expand his or her knowledge.

Rain Gardens: Managing Water Sustainably in the Garden and Designed Landscape by Nigel Dunnett and Andy Clayden (Timber Press, 2007). Discusses practical and creative water management techniques for gardeners and landscape designers, including green roofs, rainwater harvesting, and bio-swales.

Gaia's Garden:  A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture by Toby Hemenway.  (Chelsea Green, 2001). Thoroughly explores the ways the homeowner can apply permaculture principles to their own property, in simple, can-do terms.

The Bountiful Container by Rose Marie Nichols McGee and Maggie Stuckey (Workman, 2006).  In-depth information on the best "edibles":  fruits, herbs, vegetables and edible flowers.  Specific to container gardening but actually quite helpful for any type of gardening.

Lasagne Gardening by Patricia Lanza (Rodale Press, 1998). The sheet-mulching bible.

The Organic Lawn Care Manual by Paul Tukey (Storey Press, 2007).  A new way that helps the homeowner to go organic--even with lawns.

Noah's Garden:  Restoring the Ecology of our Own Back Yards by Sara Stein (Houghton Mifflin Company, 1995).  One excellent writer's experiences, from a novice gardener to a militant "Wild One."  The inspiration for the class that inspired The Naturescaping Workbook.

The Truth about Organic Gardening:  Benefits, Drawbacks and the Bottom Line by Jeff Gillman (Timber Press, 2008) and The Truth about Garden Remedies (Timber, 2008). Excellent analysis and fun reading.
